This is a list of alternatives to services that I am currently using. I want to keep an eye on them, in case their features/development becomes more interesting than the currently used service. Another reason is the case of a rug pull like Redis, where the service suddenly changes their license or hides behind a paywall.

  • MinIO: Garage, Ceph MinIO has already removed some features from their community edition to put them behind a paywall (administration console). While I do not require these removed features, I have started to host Garage because this sets a bad precedent.

  • Keycloak: Pocket ID, authentik Pocket ID seems to be much simpler to setup and maintain. Besides I like the idea of passkeys. Pocket ID is already deployed alongside Keycloak and connected to some services.

  • HashiCorp Vault/Terraform: OpenTofu HashiCorp has recently changed their license and become less trustworthy. Instead, consider the new forks like OpenTofu.

  • Tailscale: NetBird or plain WireGuard NetBird seems like an interesting alternative to Tailscale, because the control server is open-source as well. While plain WireGuard can work as well and was used in the past, Tailscale is much more comfortable to maintain.

  • Obsidian: Trilium I use Obsidian for note taking and git/Syncthing for synchronization. While Obsidian is not open-source software, it works so well that I could not find a nice alternative. Trilium seems too browser dependent at the moment and does not use Markdown for files unlike Obsidian.
